The Hawaii Music Experience
November 14th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedMusic of the islands is usually associated with Don Ho, and with good reason. Don’s famous classic “Tiny Bubbles” is generally associated as Hawaii music. While this song is a classic, there is much more to Hawaii Music then simple ukulele strumming. Hawaii music includes Jazz, Jawaiian, as well as rock, blues, and classical. The popularization of Hawaii music began around the turn of the century with a Broadway show entitled “The Bird of Paradise.” This play, written by Richard Walton Tully and featuring songs by natives Sylvester Kalama and Kapule Kanoa, brought the music of Hawaii front and center on the New York scene. It ran for a total of 112 shows and was a beautiful play with three acts. The effect of this play was so dramatic that Hawaii music sold more than any other style in 1915. On the flip side of this, because of the popularity of Hawaii music many of the musicians in Hawaii began incorporating many other styles into their traditional music.
Musicians from Hawaii throughout the twentieth century continued to borrow from all sorts of different influences, as well as create styles unique to the islands. The fifties and sixties saw huge growth with the explosion of surf rock and surf movies. Most of these revolved around the traditional Hawaiian culture with the music as a back drop.
Hawaii Music of Today
Now let us fast forward to the twenty first century. Hawaii music today still is rooted in the traditional past, but has blended in influences from hip hop, soul, reggae, as well as jazz and rock. One style that is unique to Hawaii music is Jawaiian. This reggae style of music started in the early eighties has grown into a full blown phenomenon in the nineteen nineties. Today it is still going strong with Bruddah Norm incorporating soulful singing with island beats. Blend this with traditional reggae and you have the best of Jawaiian. If you have not been turned onto this funky, groovy, uniquely Hawaiian sound you should take some time to check it out. If you are a fan of chilling out relaxing and all things warm, this music will become something you truly enjoy. This sound would not be possible without the traditional music of yesteryear and symbolizes that development of Hawaii from an isolated island kingdom to becoming a member of the world’s biggest super power. Give it a chance and I know it will grow on you. Hawaii music is something we can all enjoy.
